Record monthly exports point to strong growth trend Pakistan’s information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services sector is rapidly gaining ground as a key foreign exchange earner, with December 2025 exports hitting a record $437 million — the first time monthly receipts have crossed the $400 million mark, according to data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). This figure represented a 23 percent month-on-month increase and 26 percent year-on-year growth, suggesting sustained momentum rather than short-term volatility. Cumulative figures from July to December 2025 show IT exports totaling about $2.24 billion, up from approximately $1.87 billion in the same period of the previous fiscal year. If this growth trajectory continues, analysts say annual receipts could reach or exceed $5 billion by June 2026. Policy reforms boosting competitiveness Industry observers point to several policy changes that have strengthened Pakistan’s export performance. A key reform has been raising the Exporters’ Specialised Foreign Currency Account (ESFCA) retention limit from 35 percent to 50 percent, enabling IT firms to keep more of their foreign earnings, improve cash flow and reinvest in growth. The introduction of an Equity Investment Abroad (EIA) framework has also allowed IT exporters to channel retained foreign currency into overseas subsidiaries, widening their global reach and client base. Diversification of markets & services Pakistani IT companies have broadened their export destinations beyond traditional markets in North America and Europe to include the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. Freelancers and small-to-medium enterprises are also contributing significantly, especially in software development, digital marketing, data analytics and online consulting. According to industry estimates, freelance-driven exports alone could be worth up to $800 million to $1 billion annually if current trends persist. Economic impact and service-led growth IT exports now account for more than 40 percent of Pakistan’s total services exports, giving the sector a growing role in balancing external accounts amidst broader trade pressures. Unlike traditional goods exports, IT services are generally less dependent on imported inputs, making their net foreign exchange contribution comparatively higher — a meaningful factor for Pakistan’s economy as it seeks to stabilise external finances. The sector’s expansion aligns with Pakistan’s young, skilled workforce, creating jobs across technical and professional services and generating spill-over benefits for related industries such as telecommunications, fintech, education and professional training. Challenges remain, but outlook stays positive Despite the strong performance, structural challenges persist. Infrastructure gaps, particularly in broadband availability outside major cities, continue to hamper broader participation. Skills development is another area requiring continuous investment, especially as global demand shifts toward advanced technologies like AI, cybersecurity and cloud computing. Additionally, consistent regulatory environments and business-friendly policies will be critical to sustaining export momentum. Even with these hurdles, the consistent record figures suggest that the $5 billion export target for FY2025-26 is well within reach, marking a notable shift in Pakistan’s export profile and reinforcing IT’s role as a cornerstone of future economic growth.
