The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed that the 5G spectrum auction, a key milestone for next-generation mobile services in Pakistan, will take place on March 10, 2026. The regulator told reporters that the schedule is unlikely to change, providing certainty for telecom operators preparing to bid.
The auction will offer a total of 597 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum across several frequency bands. To ensure meaningful participation and coverage, the PTA has mandated that each of the three existing mobile network operators must acquire at least 100 MHz in the bidding process.
Auction format and participation
PTA officials have said the auction will be conducted using a multi-round electronic clock auction format, where bidders compete over successive rounds to secure blocks of spectrum. The 2,600 MHz and 3,500 MHz bands, which are essential for 5G services, will be offered in the first round.
Telecom companies interested in participating are required to submit applications along with a $15 million bank guarantee by a set deadline ahead of the auction. Qualified bidders will also take part in mock auctions before the main event to familiarise themselves with the electronic bidding process.
What comes after the auction
After the auction concludes and licences are assigned, telecom operators are expected to begin rolling out 5G services within three to six months. This phase will require significant additional investments in infrastructure, including new radio equipment and network upgrades, before services are commercially launched.
PTA officials have also said the auction framework includes incentives designed to support broader network expansion and improved service quality, including spectrum sharing and eased regulatory terms.
