Nationwide unrest after Iran leader’s reported killing

Dozens Killed as Protests Turn Deadly Across Pakistan Following Iran Supreme Leader’s Killing

Protests erupted across major cities in Pakistan after reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a joint U.S.–Israeli military strike, triggering anger among political and religious groups. Demonstrations, particularly in Karachi, Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Islamabad, quickly escalated into violent clashes between protesters and security forces.

Authorities say at least 23 people were killed in the unrest. The dead included 10 in Karachi during clashes outside the U.S. Consulate, where demonstrators attempted to breach the security perimeter, and 11 in Skardu and other northern areas, where protesters reportedly set fire to a UN office and clashed with law enforcement. Another two deaths were reported in Islamabad during street confrontations.

Clashes at the U.S. diplomatic mission

In Karachi, tensions peaked outside the U.S. Consulate, where crowds chanting anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans attempted to force their way through security barriers. Police and paramilitary units responded with tear gas, batons, and gunfire amid stone-pelting and property damage. Multiple injuries were reported alongside the fatalities.

Local officials noted that police reinforcements were deployed, and Sindh Rangers issued warnings that violent behaviour and vandalism would prompt strict legal action.

Protests spread beyond Karachi

Violent demonstrations were also reported in Skardu, where a UN building was set ablaze, and security forces regained control after intense clashes, contributing to the rising death toll. In Islamabad, thousands gathered near the Red Zone with slogans against U.S. and Israeli actions; tear gas and aerial firing were used by police to disperse the crowds. Smaller protests took place in Lahore, Peshawar, and other cities, with authorities imposing restrictions on public gatherings to prevent further escalation.

Government officials, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, appealed for calm and lawful expression of protest, emphasising that security forces would maintain order.

Security response and restrictions

In response to the unrest, security was tightened nationwide. In some regions, authorities invoked Section 144, banning public assemblies and protests, to curb further violence. Military and paramilitary units were placed on alert near key diplomatic missions and government areas.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan issued advisories to U.S. citizens, urging them to avoid large crowds and remain vigilant amid the heightened tensions.

Broader impact and political reactions

The violence underscores sensitivities in Pakistan over regional conflicts and foreign policy issues. National leaders condemned the violence while expressing solidarity with affected populations and urging protesters to maintain peace. The protests have drawn global attention, with reactions varying widely across diplomatic and media circles.
