Imran Khan Undergoes Follow-Up Eye Treatment at PIMS in Islamabad

Imran Khan follow-up eye treatment at PIMS

Imran Khan was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Tuesday for a scheduled follow-up eye treatment, according to hospital sources. The procedure was the second dose of an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection, part of ongoing care for his eye condition.

A doctor at PIMS said Mr Khan received the injection on Feb 24, after being examined by a team that included a cardiologist and a consultant physician. The consultant cardiologist also performed an echocardiogram and an ECG, both of which were normal. He added that Khan was clinically stable before, during, and after the procedure.

Treatment procedure and next steps

The treatment was conducted as day-care surgery under standard monitoring and safety protocols in the operating theatre. Following the session, Khan was discharged with follow-up advice and care instructions for ongoing management of his condition.

According to a government statement reported by other outlets, medical specialists recommended additional injections as part of his treatment plan, and a third dose is expected in March.

Political parties’ response and transparency concerns

Separately, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and its leaders criticised the lack of prior public communication about the treatment, calling for greater transparency and access to independent doctors for Khan’s care. They reiterated demands that he be treated at a hospital of his family’s choosing and in the presence of his personal physicians.

The government, however, defended the arrangements, saying the former prime minister was taken to PIMS “under strict security arrangements” and that all legal and humanitarian protocols were followed.

Context on health condition

Khan was diagnosed with a serious eye condition earlier this year, which party sources and some reports say has led to significant vision loss in his right eye. The treatment being provided involves specialised injections intended to manage the underlying vascular issue.
